Curated by Eva Yaa Asantewaa for Gibney’s New Voices: Spotlight series, and by JACK as part of Stacy Grossfield’s Images // Landscapes series
As conversations of mental health and generational trauma become more widely discussed within Black communities, Chiron in Leo enters those conversations by showing the effects that white supremacy has had on the mental health of Black families, and how the traumas experienced in childhood have a lasting impact on adult life.
Informed by an astrological aspect in J. Bouey’s chart, Chiron in Leo brings about a healing of the inner child by addressing trauma and modeling healing practices that could benefit the witnesses. In Greek mythology, Chiron is known as the “wounded healer” and this mythos greatly informed the characterization and narrative of Chiron in this film. This work is largely informed by storytelling, particularly, the overwhelming and fragmented sensational experiences related to trauma through both the physicalization and vocalization of metamorphosing memories.
Please note this film includes scenes that might affect photosensitive viewers.
Content Warning: Chiron in Leo addresses themes of childhood abandonment and physical abuse.
