ENSEMBLE
PAMPLEMOUSSE
& PARLOUR TAPES+

December 19, 2016

An evening featuring bi-coastal new music group Ensemble Pamplemousse and Chicago-based collective Parlour Tapes+

TIX: 15/10 (discount is optional for anyone!)

Fresh of the presses from their tour, Ensemble Pamplemousse brings new flavors and objects to a new form, a new piece, a new experience. Instead of discrete pieces filling out your typical concert, the composer-performer collective has co-authored a piece of strange magic, an exquisite corpse of exquisite corpses, a work sending each members' talents and specialties skittering across its surface. This concert-length set has been developed collectively by bringing together everyone's favorite sounds and materials together into one exhilarating combination, developed by all. What a better way to reach the sublimely absurd than mashing up musical identities? Plus, there's a flute solo.

Opening for Pamplemousse with be a performance by Chicago-based experimental cassette label, Parlour Tapes+. They will perform the following:

Jane Ate Soup, a no-instrument symphony co-created by Jessica Anne and Deidre Huckabay. Honouring the onstage death of Jane Little, bassist in the Atlanta Symphony & holder of the world record for longest professional tenure in an orchestra.

Casualty of Society, an office meeting led by Zach Moore. Confrounting the complexities of navigating one's self in a workplace environment, the antithesis of self expression.

Ehhhhhhhh, an archive of vocal sounds curated by Jenna Lyle--material mined from newscasters, Seinfeld, and you & me. Exploring artifacts that arise as the result of prolonged bodily investment in a single frame of mind.

Composer/performer collective Ensemble Pamplemousse was founded in 2003 to provide a focal point for like-minded creators with a thirst for sonic exploration. The ensemble is a close-knit group of divergent artistic personalities, emergent from training in disparate musical fields. Their collective love for the exquisite in all sonic realms leads the ensemble to persistently discover new vistas of sound at the frayed edges of dissective instrumental performance technique. Compositions aggregate each member's unique virtuosic talents into extraordinary magical moments. In the flexible moments of performance, the ensemble weaves together shapes of resonance, clusters of glitch, skitters of hyper action, and masses of absurdity into impeccable structures of unified beauty.

Parlour Tapes+ is a Chicago-based new music cassette tape label, a media and performance collective that mounts unlikely concert-happenings and publishes an online magazine, as well as a group of performing, composing, improvising rug-cutters who create and realize new work themselves. They are as likely to mount heartbreaking and intimate concert-concerts (e.g. Spektral Quartet) as they are to fabricate a Clue-esque musical murder mystery or stage a fake job fair and completely benign brainwashing initiative nested in the perfectly unassuming shell of the contemporary concert.

Pamplemousse press quotes:
[In Pamplemousse's music] mime was made musical, outer space and inner space were inverted, organic essences were redefined, and music, enthralled, was enthralling. Wisdom and frolic do-si-do’ed.
Jean Ballard Terepka, Theater Scene

In [this New York composers’ collective’s] music, the absurd dances with the sublime, and playfulness collides with rigor.
Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader
