or how i became an ice princess
By I AM A BOYS CHOIR
November 12 - 14, 2015
I AM A BOYS CHOIR, the interdisciplinary collective responsible for last year's mind- and muscle-bending So Long, Willy (Let's Go Home) at LaMaMa, glides into JACK with a piece that is – and is not – about Tonya Harding and her relationship with the world of elite figure skating competitions. In or how i became an ice princess, collective members Chris DeVita, Adam Rigg and Kate D'Arcus Attwell delve into the body myth of the female athlete, the writings of philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler, and the process of earning institutional validation by conforming to specific identity markers in regards to race, class, and gender. The company seeks to break open/down those monolithic, phallocentric structures and institutions; things that seem solid and permanent (capitalism, for one!), but upon closer inspection are actually flimsy and porous. Also: mini trampolines, blood feuds, sequins, jellyfish and Oksana Baiul!

I AM A BOYS CHOIR is an interdisciplinary collective founded in 2013 by Chris DeVita, Adam Rigg and Kate D'Arcus Attwell. Their work straddles performance, video, music, and installation. Our projects utilize clashing aesthetics, pop culture, personal relics/public histories, and a fair dose of camp to gleefully dissect serious conversations about personal politics, gender, community, and otherness. Recent and upcoming works have been seen at REDCAT, La Mama ETC, Movement Research @ Judson Church, Dixon Place, Mount Tremper Arts, Wendy's Subway, The Wassaic Project and BAM (Everybooty).
