MAGDA & CHELSEA: The Vulgar Early Works
December 18 - 20, 2014
The Vulgar Early Works is an evening-length concert by the dynamic Philly-based dance/performance duo Magda & Chelsea. The work presented at JACK is recombination and composting of everything the ladies have been up to since they met, and it is meant to lead to a conclusive transitional mind-blow of epic proportions. The material the artists are drawing from contains – as their pieces always do – self-love, subversive humor, feminist spit, and a sexual, angst-ridden cry against society. The genre? Oh, somewhere between TED Talk, modern dance, therapeutic seminar, stand-up comedy, and abstract theater.
Magda San Millán and Chelsea Murphy began collaborating in 2012, while studying at the Headlong Performance Institute in Philadelphia. Since then, they have been making raucous dance/theater work together. Their first joint project, Rooster & Snowball, has been presented at Jumpstart LiveArts, DanceNOW at Joe’s Pub, and New Dance Alliance. Their second collaboration, Singer/Songwriter, was shown by ThirdBird and the Effervescent Collective. They have premiered work through several festivals, including the ReMix Festival with Susan Rethorst, the SoLow Festival and SwimPony’s Cross Pollination series.
