luciana achugar: OTRO TEATRO (carnal church dance)
September 23 - 24, 2014
Two-time Bessie Award winner luciana achugar presents a ritual dance experience made by everyone for everyone. This new work, described by the artist as “made from the guts” of her 2014 piece OTRO TEATRO (which premiered in February at the Walker Art Center and was subsequently shown at NYLA) is an extension and a culmination of The Pleasure Project, in which achugar and her nine collaborators performed around city public spaces over the course of three months. These interventions were meant to “unsocialize” themselves and break free from normative social behavior. The resulting piece calls for “being in pleasure” and gives voice to bodies by filling the space with dance. Commissioned by Le Mouvement – Performing the City Festival in Biel, Switzerland, OTRO TEATRO will be presented at JACK over two evenings.
luciana achugar is a Brooklyn-based choreographer from Uruguay, sharing her presence and involvement between NYC and Montevideo contemporary dance communities. Her work deals with the post-colonial world and with efforts to undo the current power structures from within. She is a two-time "Bessie" Award recipient, a 2013 Guggenheim Fellow and Creative Capital Grantee, among other accolades.
