They say that you exit the dance club a different person than you came in. Roused by Afro-Electronic beats that make the heart race, remarkable dancer Kouakou shares a rebirth into acceptance and affirmation.

About the artists

michel papach kouakou

Michel Papach Kouakou (Performer) is a choreographer and dancer from the Ivory Coast. He is the founder and director of Daara Dance. Michel received his MFA in Dance from Hollins University. He is the recipient of the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Dance (2012), a Jerome Foundation Fellowship for research in dance (2012), winner of a New York Foundation of the Arts Artist Fellowship (2008), and winner of the U.S. Japan Fellowship (2008) to conduct six months of research in Tokyo and Kyoto. In 2008 he was nominated for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative and in 2010 and was a finalist in The A.W.A.R.D. Show in New York City and Los Angeles. Mr. Kouakou moved to New York in 2004 and subsequently to Los Angeles, where he is now based and has been a lecturer at UCLA since 2009. He maintains an active touring and teaching schedule across the globe and continues to pursues his long-term goal of building an “artistic bridge” between his origins in the Ivory Coast and the US.

Donterro Culp

 

Donterreo began his training at I-Live Center of the Arts in Saint Mary’s, Georgia. Mr. Culp graduated from East Carolina University in Spring 2019 with a BFA in Dance with a concentration in Performance and Choreography, alongside a minor in Business Administration. While at East Carolina, Mr. Culp had many opportunities to create new works and was fortunate enough to receive the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Award which allowed him to produce an evenings length work. Additionally, Mr. Culp trained at the Trinity Laban London Conservatoire of Music and Dance where he studied dance science and dance technique. He has performed works by choreographers David Ingram, Tommi Galaska, John Dixon, Jennifer Archibald, Richard Smith and many others. Since being with Nimbus, Mr. Culp has had the opportunity to perform works by Sofia Nappi, Kristen Klein, Dawn Marie Bazemore. This is Mr. Culp third season with the company and he is excited to work more closely with Artistic Director Samuel Pott.
